    Responsibilities

    • The cook performs a key function in the facility dietary department assuming the primary responsibility for preparing wholesome, nutritious, and appetizing food according to menus and recipes.
    • The cook assures all applicable sanitation codes are followed in the recipes, cooking, distribution and storage of food and beverages, and works collaboratively with the Chef and Food Service Supervisor to assure HACCP compliance.

    Qualifications

    • High school graduate or equivalent is desired; but at a minimum, must be able to read, speak, and understand the English language.
    • Bilingual in Spanish speaking skills is preferred.
    • Holds current Food Sanitation Certificate.
    • Job Knowledge:
    • ability to prepare and cook a variety of foods in large quantities; knowledge of special diets; seasoning requirements; cooking times; temperature controls; ability to estimate quantities of food requirements; limiting waste; utilizing leftovers while serving attractive, appetizing meals.
    • Experience in an institutional setting is preferred.
    • Experience with dietary service line is preferred.
    • Awareness/knowledge of sanitation practices as it relates to the food sanitation code.
    • Ability to perform basic math calculation to assist with food order and convert recipes.
    • Must be able to follow directions and properly perform assigned tasks.
    • Must be able to work independently of the Food Service Supervisor/chef.
    • Must possess the ability to provide simple direction to dietary aides and dishwashers.
